Handbuilding & Wheelthrowing

This class focuses on developing wheelthrowing, handbuilding, and surface design techniques. Through a series of in-class exercises and projects, students will learn relief carving, coil building, advanced underglaze application methods, and basic wheelthrowing skills. This class is for students who have not taken any previous pottery & wheelthrowing classes or any wheelthrowing students looking to explore handbuilding.

This class is designed to challenge your drawing and painting skills and refine your techniques. Students with previous drawing and painting experience for students from Painting and Drawing I, will expand their knowledge on painting techniques such as color theory, material mastery, and still-life rendering. This class will allow for more creative exploration with guidance from the instructor. Our main mediums will be charcoal, pastels, graphite, oil painting, and watercolor.

This introductory-level course is designed to give students a broad foundation of drawing skills, including: shading and volume, negative space, drawing objects from life, judging proportion, working from reference images, and more. Students will be introduced to a number of classic drawing media, including charcoal, the classic #2 pencil, and crowquill (dip pen) and ink. In addition to these skills, the course will teach students to see their subjects with an artist’s eye - first focusing on observing reality accurately, and then expanding into composing pictures beautifully, compellingly, and through their own unique styles and sensibilities. Perfect for beginners or more experienced artists who want to reconnect with the basics.

Students interested in advancing their skill level are encouraged to sign up for Drawing II in Summer 2025.

How does a picture communicate an idea? A feeling? A movement? A joke? Students in this class will dive deep into the language of drawing, and how to use that language to get their idea across. Pulling content from academic drawing, children's book design, graphic design, graphic novels, advertising, and more, students will be encouraged to experiment, play, and explore - while also developing their own unique "voice" in the language of illustration

This course is designed for students who have taken a beginning drawing class or who are familiar with concepts like value and shading, negative space, and drawing from life/reference. Students will work through lessons, exercises, and projects designed to deepen their understanding of drawing fundamentals as well as help them explore more complicated subjects like mass and volume, drawing realistic textures, the basics of linear perspective, and the foundations of portraiture. Other topics like color, ink, expressive markmaking, and others may be addressed based on student interest.

The figure, whether human or animal, is a powerful expressive subject in art. In this class, students will be exposed to figurative works by artists to guide our discussion and exploration. Formal elements of foundational drawing will be covered such as gesture, line, shape, volume, anatomy, and perspective. Other topics will include relational meaning, the art of responsive painting, and personal-storytelling. Materials used will be charcoal/graphite drawing and acrylic painting.

This class explores the transformative power and playful nature of collage. Delving into the past and present, students will be exposed to a collage artist or collage collective each week, while exploring techniques such as playing with scale, layering and revealing images, experimenting with texture, incorporating found objects, text and illustration plus more to help them develop their voices as mixed media artists. Students are encouraged to bring materials from home, collaborate with peers, and work at their own pace to create surreal, editorial, expressive, conceptual, thoughtful and dynamic pieces of art in a supportive and exploratory environment.
