Explore your creativity this summer with weekly classes at Brookline Arts Center. Choose from ceramics, jewelry, painting, bookmaking and more, with options for different ages, skill levels, and interests.

Classes meet once a week for 5–9 weeks, beginning in late June or July. Some classes are for teens ages 13–17, while select classes are open to ages 16 and up.

We offer private lessons and financial aid to accommodate anyone who wishes to take a class. For questions about our policies or for more information, reach out to us at office@brooklineartscenter.com


Mondays

Pottery and Wheelthrowing
Level: Beginner

In this introductory class, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of both wheelthrowing and handbuilding. The teacher will provide you with step-by-step instructions and demonstrations to help you create unique clay objects. Demonstrations include cups, vases, plates, lids, throwing off the hump, and more. All levels will learn about decorating techniques. This class is for students who have not taken any previous pottery & wheelthrowing classes. Exclusion Date: July 27

Jewelry and Metalsmithing

Make beautiful jewelry with instruction from a working artist who will guide you to shape, polish, solder, pierce, etch and embellish jewelry in copper and brass. Stone settings, etching, and making findings will also be introduced. This class is for all levels of experience. Exclusion Date: July 13

Linocut Printmaking Fundamentals

Learn the basics of linocut printmaking in this intensive! This class will focus on carving techniques, how to hand-print relief prints, and turning images and compositions into beautiful relief prints. Students will focus on making several single-block prints in this class.

Enhance your previous painting and drawing skills and techniques using color theory, material mastery, and still-life rendering. With mediums including charcoal, pastels, graphite, watercolor, and oils, this class allows for more creative expression alongside guided instruction.

Reductive Relief Printmaking

Learn how to create colorful and complex compositions for linocut prints with multi-layer block printing techniques. This class will focus on color theory and reductive printmaking (using one block to make many layers for a print.) Familiarity with relief printmaking techniques is recommended for this course however, beginners are welcome!

In this 5-week intensive course, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of facial anatomy, laying the groundwork for strong portraiture skills. Students will learn how to render different types of facial features with drawing & painting materials. All levels of experience are welcome.

This is a beginning level painting and drawing class to learn foundational skills. In this course students will gain a basic understanding of drawing with charcoal, graphite and pastels. Students will explore color theory in mediums of paint, such as watercolor, acrylic and oil painting.

Explore the captivating world of cyanotype photography in this intensive 5-week class. Throughout this class, you'll learn the fundamentals of cyanotype processes and journey into advanced lessons such as toning, experimental substrates, and mixed media. This is a fun, experimental class open to beginners and beyond!

Experimental Photography Studio

Whether you’re a beginner or already have some photography experience, this experimental image-making course is perfect for anyone looking to explore photographic techniques that do not require a traditional darkroom setup. Students will experiment with lumen prints using sunlight and found materials, cyanotype variations, handmade photograms, DIY pinhole cameras, and photographs made from plants, while also altering printed photographs through collage, stitching, drawing, and painting. By the end of the class, students will leave with a portfolio of one-of-a-kind experimental images and the skills to continue exploring alternative photographic processes on their own.

Learn the basics of bookmaking in this class! Students will learn how to make a variety of bookforms and learn a variety of bookbinding techniques to make their own, original, handmade artist books. Techniques included in the course are folded books (accordion books, zines, cards), books using glue, and basic sewn books (pamphlet, stab binding). Students will learn to create text blocks, learn how to cover boards to make covers with bookcloth, textiles, and paper, as well as experiment with altered book techniques and collage. Students will make dummy books, journals, books from prints, and artist books.

Refine your oil painting skills with lessons on advanced color theory, painting handling and surface techniques, complex composition and design, and light and form exercises. Lessons will allow for more creative exploration with guidance from the instructor. This class is suitable for students who have taken Oil Painting I, Painting & Drawing I, or students who are self-taught intermediate oil painters.

In this beginner-friendly intensive, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of handbuilding through functional ceramic projects using pinching, coiling, and slab-building techniques. The instructor will provide step-by-step demonstrations to help students create unique forms such as cups, bowls, vases, plates, lidded containers, and other useful objects while exploring a variety of surfaces, textures, and decorating techniques. This class is perfect for students with little to no previous ceramics experience who are interested in building one-of-a-kind functional pottery by hand. Information
Private Lessons   One-on-one Lessons and Group Lessons are offered by the BAC faculty for all ages with pricing ranging between $75–$150 per hour. Click here for more information.  

Financial Aid  

The BAC believes the arts should be accessible to all! Tuition assistance (or financial aid) for full season classes, intensives, and workshops is available for all individuals and families throughout the year. Click here to be redirected to our financial aid form.

Please do not register for a class you wish to apply financial assistance for, the BAC will assist you with your registration process if your application has been accepted.

Tuition assistance requests will not be fulfilled until 1-2 weeks before the start date of the requested class.
Tuition Assistance requests can be fullfilled up to 2 weeks after the start date of the session if space permits. Until then, we ask for your patience while we work to place students in their requested classes. Scholarships for Ceramics & Jewelry are granted per individual once per fiscal year (September – August). Financial Aid does not apply to private lessons. 

We are, additionally, proud to partner with the Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program – in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, and the Massachusetts Health Connector to allow participants to identify the amount they can contribute towards class
