Explore your creativity this fall at the Brookline Arts Center! With classes in sculpting, drawing and painting, photography, and more, kids and teens ages 2-17 can explore their imagination in an engaging, inclusive, and vibrant space.

Mondays

Fundamentals of Comics
Ages: 8-12

Dive into the comic-making process from beginning to end: character building, crafting expressions and poses, selecting shots, inking and color, and more. This class combines projects, games, silly warmups, and practice exercises to help young cartoonists find their comic voices and use them.

In this class, we will jump into watercolor and all of its possibilities. We will learn techniques in watercolor that can be applied to larger watercolor projects. This class will include a variety of watercolor exercises to help you fine-tune your watercolor skills and/or introduce you to the medium. We will work mostly from reference images and still life, covering a variety of topics.

Classic printmaking techniques with a new and exciting spin! For those who like to get a little messy and try something new, Kid Prints will introduce a variety of techniques from string printing to eraser carving and more! All techniques are safe and non-toxic.

Printmaking is an artistic process of creating and transferring an image from one surface to another, usually paper, to make multiple copies. It uses simple materials like rubber, sponges, foraged materials (leaves, flowers, etc.) or cardboard to create a "stamp" that is then covered in paint and pressed onto paper. This can be a fun, messy, and creative activity that helps children learn about patterns, color, and textures.

Altered Books are a fun way to reuse old books or reinvent a book with new art! Students will learn how to alter books to make new artist books through a variety of techniques. Let's make Zines! Zines are a form of DIY publishing and a great way to share interests, community messages, or make original mini-books. They also provide a easy and efficient way to provide information to many people and generally easy to make many copies of with a copy machine. Start with a blank 8.5x11" piece of paper and the possibilities are endless!

We highly recommend that workshop participants bring materials to collage with for the workshop. Participants will study a variety of zines, learn basic zine making techniques including the basic 8-page zine and pamphlet style.

Punch Needle Embroidery Workshop

Learn the basics of punch needle embroidery, from designing your own image and stretching your fabric, to familiarizing yourself with the punch needle tool and completing a small textile piece. Students will experiment with texture, line, and color while discovering the many creative possibilities of this meditative and versatile fiber art. No experience necessary, and all materials will be provided.

Haley Wood is a Cambridge-based fiber artist who has been working with punch needle embroidery and rug tufting since 2018. She has exhibited her work at the Abigail Ogilvy Gallery in Los Angeles, the MassArt Auction, and the Spring/Break Art Fair in Manhattan.
