Kids & Teen Classes


Explore your creativity this Spring at the Brookline Arts Center! With classes in sculpting, drawing and painting, photography, and more, kids and teens ages 2-17  can explore their imagination in an engaging, inclusive, and vibrant space.

Mondays

Intro to Clay
Ages:  5-7
Dates: Mon, Apr. 7 - Jun. 9* (8 wks)

This hands-on pottery program will introduce students to handbuilding fundamentals. Explore your creativity while learning various techniques for creating your own mugs, bowls, and other unique pieces! Wheelthrowing will not be included in this session.

Ceramic work will be fired and ready to take home 6-8 weeks after the session ends. You will be contacted by a staff member when the work is ready for pickup

Fundamentals of Comics
Ages: 8-12

This class invites young cartoonists to dive into their love of making comics. We’ll take the process from beginning to end: building characters, crafting expressions and poses, selecting shots, inking and color, and generally bringing our stories to life. With a combination of projects, games, silly warmups, and practice exercises, this class aims to help young artists find their comic voices–and use them.

Painting & Drawing

In this beginner level painting and drawing class for teens, students will learn foundational skills of drawing using materials such as charcoal, graphite and pastels. Students will also explore color theory in mediums of paint, such as watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. After covering foundational techniques, this class will accumulate into a more open project at the end of the session, allowing for deeper creativity.

Intro to Drawing

In this fun-filled session, children will explore basic drawing techniques using colorful materials while developing their creativity and imagination. They'll learn to express themselves through simple shapes, lines, and textures, making new friends along the way!

Fundamentals of Drawing

Each week, this class will introduce students to foundational art skills through creative drawing projects. Students will alternately explore topics like color and color schemes, shading objects, and negative space, and use those skills to make their own creative masterpieces. Using a variety of drawing media from marker and colored pencil to pastels and inking with dip pens, and exploring classic drawing genres like still life, portraiture, mapmaking, abstraction, and more, students will get a broad introduction to some of the many possibilities that drawing provides.

Jewelry & Metalsmithing Intensive
Ages: 12-17
Dates: Wed, May 14 - Jun. 18* (5 wks)

Make beautiful jewelry and metal sculptures with instruction from a working artist. They will guide you to shape, polish, solder, pierce, etch and embellish jewelry in copper and brass. Hollow forms, stones settings, stone inlay, repousse and reticulations will also be introduced.

Fundamentals of Painting
Ages: 10-15

This is a beginning-level painting class. The majority of this class will be spent learning with acrylics, but students will also get a brief intro to watercolor and oil painting. This class is designed to build skills around painting techniques such as color theory, material mastery, and still-life rendering. This class will start with learning foundations for painting and accumulate into a more open project at the end allowing for deeper creativity.

Wonderful Little Hands
Ages: 2-4 (+ Parent)

In this multimedia class, enjoy spending time with your little one while creating beautiful moments together. Parents and caretakers will join their children in a variety of artistic mediums that are perfect for little hands. Projects will include painting, stamping, clay, string painting, decalcomania and much more. From fine motor skills to hand-eye coordination, your child with have as much fun learning as they do making art.

If you plan to attend with 2 caregivers and/or 2 children, please select the second class fee option of $262. This also applies if 2 caregivers attend with 1 child. The first class fee option of $217 only applies to 1 caregiver and 1 child.

Creative Storytelling Studio

What makes us love stories? What draws us to our favorite characters? Together we will unite storytelling, humor, and art in this class on puppet making! Each week we will focus on a different kind of visual storytelling. From socks to shadows, we will bring our own creatures and characters to life and perform their stories together.
