Painting & Drawing Techniques

This is a drawing and painting class for students looking to enhance their skills, all levels are welcome! We will cover a variety of subjects such as landscape, still life, portraiture, and abstraction while learning and refining techniques through shading, observational painting, and color theory. We will be using charcoal and oils. This is open to all levels and is a great class to take as a beginner, or as an initial introduction to painting. Perfect for students who have already taken courses at BAC (e.g. Zoe Schein's "Draw Like a Pro" or Amanda Pickler's "Scheming With Color")

Intro to Illustration

How does a picture communicate an idea? A feeling? A movement? A joke? This project-based course will spotlight foundational concepts and strategies in the world of illustration, providing students with the opportunity to develop both their skills and their styles in a variety of genres and media. Projects will prompt students to explore spatial relationships, guide the eye confidently through a picture, balance lights and darks, and communicate clearly through symbolism. We will pull content from graphic design, picture book illustration, advertisement, character design, and comics and graphic novels, and explore versatile media like ink, cut paper, and colored pencil (like you’ve never seen it before!).  Students will be encouraged to experiment, play, and explore - while also developing their own unique "voice" in the language of illustration.

This class will give a foundation of color theory through painting and printmaking practices. We will be using acrylics, watercolor, and mono-printing. Students will learn various techniques to handle each medium while understanding the complexities of color. How do our eyes perceive color and why is it important in our art? What are the psychological and compositional elements at play when we interact with color through any piece of art? Together we will investigate what can be an intimidating part of art-making. This class is open to all levels, no experience is required.

This introductory-level course is designed to give students a broad foundation of drawing skills, including shading and volume, negative space, drawing objects from life, judging proportion, working from reference images, and more. Students will be introduced to a number of classic drawing media, including charcoal, the classic #2 pencil, crowquill (dip pen), and ink. In addition to these skills, the course will teach students to see their subjects with an artist’s eye - first focusing on observing reality accurately, and then expanding into composing pictures beautifully, compellingly, and through their own unique styles and sensibilities. Perfect for beginners or more experienced artists who want to reconnect with the basics.

Portraiture in Oil

This is a beginner - intermediate level painting class for students looking to enhance their skills in oil painting portraiture. You do not need any prior experience to take this class. We will cover oil painting materials, a brief understanding of color theory, and drawing portraiture. The breath of this class will all be focused through the lens of the figure, more specifically portraiture. This is a technique focused class and students will gain an understanding of abstraction in the figure, as well as the methods and skills to practice for rendering a portrait.

Indian Folk Art

Being culturally diverse and distinct, India has many folk art forms from different regions. This class will introduce you to some of these ancient and traditional folk art forms of India. We will introduce the popular Madhubani and Kalamkari Art forms. These folk art forms are known for their striking geometric patterns, floral designs and use of bright vivid colors. You will learn patterns and motifs of each folk art form and create and take home a beautiful painting of Madhubani Art.

Create Custom Designs with Knitting and Crochet

Learn how to design your own knitwear and crochet clothing based on color and yarn on hand. Let color and texture guide you in designing your own garments and surface patterns in knitting or crochet. The class will touch on aspects such as using scrap yarn, creating a color palette, and the intarsia technique. We will discuss ways to achieve free-flowing color patterns in a grid-locked medium as well as important garment design aspects such as drape and shape. Each week we will get together to develop our own designs with the intention of having a finished garment by the end of the class. Knowledge of basic knitting or crochet techniques required.
