In this class, students will encounter and explore the fundamentals of drawing in color. Through guided exercises and projects, students will practice with foundational tools of color, such as hue, value, and saturation, using these and other elements to build tone, mood, rhythm, and luminosity within their works. The course will introduce students to the basics of several color media, using chalk and oil pastels, colored pencils, and cut-paper collage to craft compelling color compositions from both life and reference. We highly recommend that workshop participants bring materials to collage with for the workshop. Participants will study a variety of zines, learn basic zine-making techniques, including the basic 8-page zine and pamphlet style.

Each session offers prompts paired with techniques such as image transfers, layered composition, intricate hand-cutting, and narrative building using provided supplies and/or photos and materials brought from home. Learn the basics of punch needle embroidery, from designing your own image and stretching your fabric, to familiarizing yourself with the punch needle tool and completing a small textile piece. Students will experiment with texture, line, and color while discovering the many creative possibilities of this meditative and versatile fiber art. No experience necessary, and all materials will be provided.
Haley Wood is a Cambridge-based fiber artist who has been working with punch needle embroidery and rug tufting since 2018. She has exhibited her work at the Abigail Ogilvy Gallery in Los Angeles, the MassArt Auction, and the Spring/Break Art Fair in Manhattan.
