In this class, we will jump into watercolor and all of its possibilities. We will learn techniques in watercolor that can be applied to larger watercolor projects. This class will include a variety of watercolor exercises to help you fine-tune your watercolor skills and/or introduce you to the medium. We will work mostly from reference images and still life, covering a variety of topics.

In this class, students will encounter and explore the fundamentals of drawing in color. Through guided exercises and projects, students will practice with foundational tools of color, such as hue, value, and saturation, using these and other elements to build tone, mood, rhythm, and luminosity within their works. The course will introduce students to the basics of a number of color media, using chalk and oil pastels, colored pencils, and cut-paper collage to craft compelling color compositions from both life and reference. The class will culminate with students each designing themselves a final project assignment to more deeply explore or refine one of the skills or processes introduced in class; these projects will be supported by feedback from both instructor and classmates informed by each student’s individual project goals.

This introductory-level course is designed to give students a broad foundation of drawing skills, including: shading and volume, negative space, drawing objects from life, judging proportion, working from reference images, and more. Students will be introduced to a number of classic drawing media, including charcoal, the classic #2 pencil, and crowquill (dip pen) and ink. In addition to these skills, the course will teach students to see their subjects with an artist’s eye - first focusing on observing reality accurately, and then expanding into composing pictures beautifully, compellingly, and through their own unique styles and sensibilities. Perfect for beginners or more experienced artists who want to reconnect with the basics.

Tuition assistance (or financial aid) for classes and workshops is available for all individuals and families throughout the year. Click here to be redirected to our financial aid form.
Please do not register for a class you wish to apply financial assistance for, the BAC will assist you with your registration process if your application has been accepted.
Tuition assistance requests will not be fulfilled until the week of December 16 - 20. Tuition Assistance requests can be fullfilled up to 2 weeks after the start date of the session if space permits. Until then, we ask for your patience while we work to place students in their requested classes. Scholarships for Ceramics & Jewelry are granted per individual once per fiscal year (September – August)
We are, additionally, proud to partner with the Mass Cultural Council's Card to Culture program – in collaboration with the Department of Transitional Assistance, the Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, and the Massachusetts Health Connector to allow participants to identify the amount they can contribute towards class tuition.
