Kids & Teens Classes


Nurture your child’s creativity this summer with art classes at Brookline Arts Center, where kids and teens ages 5-17 can explore their imagination in an engaging, inclusive, and vibrant space!

We offer private lessons and financial aid to accommodate anyone who wishes to take a class. Week 1: June 23 - 27, 2025

Zoom Into Art

Zoom into art this week as we explore whole new worlds within our environment. We will create miniature art as well as magnify the microscopic world around us in abstract paintings, sculpture, drawings and mixed media.

Zoom in to see the world from a new perspective with digital photography. Students will learn basic introductory camera techniques using light, shutter speed and exposure. This week will cover portraiture, still life, mixed media, and abstract photography. Each day, the teacher will introduce a new photographer for the students to study and learn from. At the end of the week, students will have a portfolio of images they can be proud of. On the last day of class, each student will be invited to print their favorite photographs to exhibit in a mini gallery show with their classmates

Creatures of the Forest
Ages: 5-7

Take a walk through the wild as we paint, draw and sculpt both real and imaginary woodland characters and creatures. We will draw inspiration from the Appalachian Mountains, fairy tales from the Black Forest in Germany and the Goblin Forest in New Zealand.

This week we will feature the real and the made-up creatures of the forest that we love. Whether cuddly, crawly, cute, or wild, we’ll cartoon them, paint them, color pencil them. We’ll take the process from beginning to end: building characters, crafting expressions and poses, selecting shots, inking and coloring, and generally bringing our stories to life. With a combination of projects, games, silly warmups, and practice exercises, this class aims to help young artists find their comics voices–and use them.

Portraits in Play

This week, we will cover artists from various art movements who have explored portraiture and various other forms of art. We'll learn the basics of human proportions, tackle the difference between a portrait and a picture, and learn strategies for getting accurate and expressive resemblance to our subjects. We will discover pop art, cubism, expressionism, and impressionism. Learn from the artists who created the movements! Each day will be inspired by a modern artist who paved the way for contemporary artists today.

We all know a portrait is a picture that looks like a person – but how do artists make portraits that “feel” like their subjects as well? In this weeklong intensive, we will begin by learning basic strategies for drawing human features. Then, using ourselves, each other, and photographic references, we will explore the more creative side of portraiture: using materials, colors, and symbols to take a picture of a face and transform it into a portrait of a person.

This week caters to students with stories to tell! Each day of this weeklong intensive will focus on a different kind of visual storytelling. From flip books to zines, puppets to stop motion, children’s books to professional-style storyboards for comics or animation, this week is all about making stories we can see.

Have you ever been to the zoo and wished you could see dragons and unicorns instead of just lions and tigers? Join us for an imagination intensive, reading about and recreating our favorite fantasy beasts in a variety of creative mediums. Beyond Our Stars

This week will take us to the moon and beyond as we design and build our own lunar-themed colonies, make paintings of nebulas and galaxies and imagine life beyond our planet.
